Returning to the 7th Circle of the Lower Bottom (Circle of Ego) depicts a scenario in which the protagonist, a woman artist, encounters her Ego—a grotesque monster named Fraat—who repeatedly screams its name and forces the artist to dig her own grave. The encounter takes place in a zone called the 7th Circle of the Lower Bottom, the Circle of Ego. The Lower Bottom is an imaginary, hellish space that is modeled on the formal organization of Dante’s Inferno. While the Inferno creates a world that reflects the worst fears of the medieval Catholic subconscious of Dante’s time, the Lower Bottom offers a critical dystopia composed of multiple layers that speculate on contemporary human spirituality. As such, Returning to the 7th Circle of the Lower Bottom is part of a greater anthology of various works exploring the concept of Hell as the darkest fears of the current Western subconscious.
